D’autres causes venaient resserrer ces liens de nos âmes et les rendre indissolubles. Nous n’avions pas lieu, l’un plus que l’autre, de nous enorgueillir de la grandeur de notre patrie. Je n’étais pas des plus riches ni Basile des plus pauvres. Il y avait parité de biens et d’inclinations, il y avait parité de condition. Ainsi tout concourait à faire régner entre nous la bonne intelligence et la concorde.

And in addition to these, there were other things also which preserved and maintained this concord unbroken and secure. For as regarded the greatness of our fatherland neither had one cause to vaunt himself over the other, nor was I burdened with riches, and he pinched by poverty, but our means corresponded as closely as our tastes. Our families also were of equal rank, and thus everything concurred with our disposition.
